Dr Tharina van Schalkwyk is a General Practitioner who grew up in Betlehem in the Eastern Free State. She grew up in a house where both her parents were medical doctors and it was therefore not surprising that she decided to follow in their footsteps. After matriculating at Witteberg High School, she enrolled to study medicine at the University of the Free State. She completed her studies in 2003 and after the necessary internship she went to Canada to practice as a General Practitioner for three years. On returning to South Africa she joined the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at the University of the Free State.
From 2011 she worked as a medical officer at the Unit for Human Reproductive and Fertility Clinic at Universitas Hospital until 2019. Here she was exposed to the full range of Infertility treatments (Ovulation Induction, Artificial Insemination and IVF) and other components of female health. She is well trained in the evaluation of infertile patients and performing gynaecological ultrasound. She was also responsible for the day to day management of the clinic and teaching of medical students.
She did several post graduate diplomas including a diploma in Obstetrics and Anaesthesiology. Her latest achievement is a diploma in Procedural Sedation from the University of the Free State. Tharina is passionate about female health and Infertility. In 2019 she started her own Female Health Practice – “Providendum”. Her dedication and compassion is reflected in the success of this practice. Because of her exceptional skills we are very fortunate to welcome her as part of the RUACH team.
She is a kind hearted person with an exceptional positive personality who easily touches the lives of everybody around her. She is extremely loyal and dedicated to her patients. She is happily married to Eugene and the proud mom of four beautiful girls. When she is not working she loves running and spending time with her family. When asked about her greatest achievement in life she will boldly quote 1 John 4:4 – “I am a daughter of the King!”
